Privacy policy

This is the privacy notice for lawrencemillman.com. It is written so a reader, including a reader in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, can see what personal data is involved and how to ask about it.

Who is responsible

Lawrence Millman is the person responsible for this site. The public postal address is P.O. Box 381582, Cambridge, MA 02238, United States. Write to that address, or use L.Millman@comcast.net. He has not appointed a representative in the European Union. You can still write to him directly.

What this site does not do

This site does not sell personal data. It does not run advertising or accounts. It does not keep a mailing list of its own. A reply to a letter is not treated as permission to add you to the newsletter. There is no analytics tool on these pages.

Privacy choices

Before optional tools load, the page asks you to choose. The two buttons are equal. I accept allows the film and the calendar (YouTube and Google may then set their own cookies). Necessary only stores only what the page needs to remember your choice and display settings.

Your choice is stored in this browser under the name millman-consent. You can open Privacy choices in the footer at any time and pick again.

There is no timer and no animation on that notice.

Display choices

Text size, light or dark theme, and the site typefaces are stored only after you use those buttons. The names are millman-theme and millman-fonts. The larger-text control is not stored. It returns to ordinary size when you reload. The page does not move photographs when you scroll. The film does not play by itself.

Film

The film is a still image stored on this site until you press Play this film. That click loads YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player at youtube-nocookie.com and records your choice to allow embeds in this browser. After playback starts, Google may receive your IP address and set or read its own cookies under Google’s policies.

Calendar

Dates on the home page and on Talks & Walks are read when the site is built. Google’s calendar is not embedded until you allow it and then press Show the Google Calendar. That step can send your IP address to Google, and Google may set cookies.

Contact

The Contact page lists a postal address and an email address. Writing that address opens your own mail app; this site does not collect the message or keep a form database. A message does not add you to the newsletter.

Newsletter

Signup happens on Substack, not in a form stored here. If you subscribe, Substack holds your address and sends the mail. Each Substack email includes a one-click unsubscribe. This site does not receive a copy of that list.

Legal bases

Remembering your privacy choice is required so the choice can be honored. Display settings are stored because you asked for them. Loading the film or the calendar happens only if you allow it. Answering a letter or an email is done so the correspondence can be completed. Google, YouTube, and Substack may process an IP address outside the United States under their own terms. This site does not receive those logs. This site makes no automated decisions about you.

Your rights

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, you can ask for access to personal data about you, a correction, erasure, a limit on processing, or a copy in a portable form, and you can object to processing based on a legitimate interest. You can withdraw a choice as easily as you gave it, with Privacy choices in the footer. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live. In the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office. In the European Economic Area it is the authority in your country. You do not have to complain to an authority before you write to Lawrence Millman.
