- Who is Lawrence Millman?
- An author, ethnographer, and mycologist who lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has written more than twenty books and made more than forty trips and expeditions to the Arctic and Subarctic.
- What is ethnomycology?
- The study of how people have used and understood fungi. His book Fungipedia describes itself as a compendium of ecological, scientific, ethnographic, and occasionally just plain weird fungal lore.
- Is a fungus named after him?
- Yes. Inonotus millmanii, a polypore he collected in Puerto Rico, was named in his honor by Leif Ryvarden.
- Does he teach foraging or edibility?
- No. His walks are about ecology, not about what is edible, and Fungipedia says of itself that it is not a cookbook. The Standards page lists documented field practices and a checklist for choosing a mushroom walk leader.
- How do I book a walk, reading, or lecture?
- Write to L.Millman@comcast.net. Name the event or book, a few dates that work, and where you are writing from. Dates already scheduled are on the Talks & Walks calendar.
- Does he speak on expedition cruises or for travel groups?
- Talks & Walks notes that he has lectured on cruise ships in the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard, Greenland, and Siberia. To ask about a date, write to the address above.
- How do I buy a signed book?
- Some titles may be available signed if he has stock. Write to L.Millman@comcast.net and he will tell you what to pay. After he names an amount, use Make a payment in the footer.
- How do I reach him for press, rights, or speaking?
- Use the Partners & Press page. That path does not add you to the Bog mailing list.
- Where is the Bog?
- New writing goes out on Substack. Recent letters are listed on the Bog page on this site.
- What is his newest book?
- A Luddite Lexicon (July 2026, No Frills Buffalo Publishing).
- How many fungi has he recorded at Fresh Pond?
- 399 species since 2005, according to GBH News in January 2026. He donates many specimens to Harvard’s Farlow Herbarium.
- Is a phone number published?
- No. Mail goes to P.O. Box 381582, Cambridge, MA 02238, and email is L.Millman@comcast.net.
- Does the film contact YouTube before play?
- No. The picture stays on the page until you press Play.
